IFRS CONSULTATION AND TRAINING

The Financial Training Institute (FTI) originated from an increasing need for quality financial related training at affordable prices. The firm expanded its services to include technical consulting while keeping its promise to provide high-quality service at an affordable price.


 


 

The quality of our services

Currently we provide technical advisory services in the fields of financial reporting, taxation and finance. The technical services team consists of staff that has a detailed, up to date technical knowledge of the subject fields as a result of lecturing these subjects at honours and masters level, while at the same time having practical experience in applying this knowledge. The quality of our service is enhanced by the critical thinking skills acquired by

performing academic research. Persons involved in the technical advisory services have practical experience in specialised industries including mining, financial services, construction, retail, infrastructure and government
sectors.

What do we do?

We provide the following technical advisory services:

  • Assistance in identifying financial reporting aspects to consider for proposed transactions or transactions which have already been concluded.
  • Preparation of formal technical opinions on financial reporting implications of transactions.
  • Review of financial statements for IFRS compliance.

How can these services be of assistance to you?

You may consider using our services for the following reasons:

  • To obtain technical opinions or assistance about the financial reporting implications of transactions. 
  • To assist you by researching and preparing supporting documents on financial reporting matters prior to or during an audit. This may result in savings in your audit fees as the groundwork that needs to be done by the auditors is reduced.
  • To assist you by ensuring that the financial statements comply with IFRS before it is compiled or presented to the auditors.
  • To obtain a second opinion on financial reporting or taxation implications of a transaction.

What makes our services different?

We aim to provide service of a high quality while keeping it affordable. Our fees are based on the time we spend. Our current rate of R800 per hour (ex. VAT) makes this service affordable and competitive. Fees are agreed upfront and any fee changes are agreed formally.

Our final product to our clients is a written report which includes a detailed discussion written in such a manner that it is easy to follow as well as references to the relevant authority. Existing clients have indicated that
they value the completeness, usefulness and professionalism of our reports.

We are a one-stop service provider. Members of our technical team work closely together and can assist with the financial reporting, tax and finance implications of a transaction at the same time.

Nico van der Merwe

Qualifications

Nico van der Merwe (Mcom Management Accounting (cum laude), CA(SA)) is an Associate Professor at the North-West University where he lectures Financial Accounting at third year and CTA level. He graduated at the North-West University with distinctions in all 31 semester courses and an average percentage of 91%. He received the award for Outstanding Academic Performance as the top performer in the faculty Economic and Management Sciences over three years. He achieved a fifth position in South Africa in the Public Practice Examination (PPE) of the Independent Regulatory Board of Auditors. He is currently enrolled for his doctorate degree (PhD) in the Accounting Education field.

Experience

Nico completed his articles at Deloitte. He has 5 years of part-time
consulting experience, which includes providing technical assistance to auditors and companies. He is also involved on a regular basis in providing continuous professional development training in the accounting profession.

Research

Nico was awarded the ABSA Bronze Medal for the best masters’ student at the North-West University. He has presented papers at four national and two international conferences and published an article in an accredited journal.
He also contributed an article to Accountancy SA. Nico is also the promoter of various masters’ students in the Financial Accounting field. He is also the author, co-author and/or editor of various Financial Accounting textbooks.
His research interests include external reporting (including IFRS) and Accounting Education.
